Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Reseach Reserve
Susie coordinates many of the volunteer-based biological monitoring programs at the Reserve, including those of birds and marine invertebrates. She oversees the quarterly surveys of Elkhorn Slough shorebirds (boat and land-based sites), as well as monthly shorebird surveys at the Reserve. Other bird monitoring projects coordinated include observations of nesting activities of Chestnut-backed Chickadees and Oat Titmouse (in oak woodlands) and raptors. She carries out annual surveys of key intertidal mudflat invertebrates and has completed several studies comparing arthropods assemblages of native and exotic vegetation. She has a Masters degree in marine science (UC Santa Cruz) and has a keen interest in insects (particularly ants), lichen, and fungi.
