The Elkhorn Slough Watershed is a varied habitat, where plants, animals, birds and fungi abound. Biodiversity (or biological diversity) refers to the variation of life within a given ecosystem, biome, or on Earth and is often used to measure of the health of biological systems or richness of an area. Biological Diversity is characterized by having a high number of endemic species (or species only found here).

Elkhorn Slough is located within a biological hotspot known as the California Floristic Province.
In addition, Elkhorn Slough is recognized as a Globally Important Bird Area and Western
