The Elkhorn Slough Rookery

For nearly 15 years, Great Blue Herons and Great Egrets have gathered every spring to nest in the tree tops in the Elkhorn Slough's north marsh. This nesting site, called the Rookery, is home to the largest breeding colony of its kind in Monterey County. Sheltered within the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, the Rookery is truly a magical place to visit.
