Elkhorn Slough Foundation Supports the Arts
The Elkhorn Slough Foundation recently launched, Art Gallery
Elkhorn Slough, a great addition to its popular website www.elkhornslough.org.
The Foundation's website already connects thousands of visitors
each month to the natural wonders of the Elkhorn Slough. Now web
browsers can view outstanding artwork reflecting the beauty and
serenity of the Elkhorn Slough area. Launched in April, the online
gallery has already featured the paintings of Mary Warshaw and
Kay Metz, as well as the nature photographs of Paul Zaretsky.
The Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve supports
this effort by displaying artwork from each online exhibit at
its Visitor Center at 1700 Elkhorn Road in Watsonville.
This "virtual" gallery is currently featuring the group exhibit
Endangered Landscapes. This artistic collaboration brought together
local artists who shared concerns about the recent "boom" in development
projects in North Monterey County. Through this exhibit they hope
to increase public awareness and highlight the beauty found in
these endangered landscapes. This collection of paintings was
exhibited from August 28 &endash; October 26, 2000 at the Monterey
County Courthouse building and included some views of the slough
that could be lost to development.
"We are honored to be able to extend the life of this unique
exhibit by highlighting it in our online gallery," said Mark Silberstein,
Executive Director of the Elkhorn Slough Foundation. "This addition
to the website will support local artists and promote conservation
efforts in the Elkhorn Slough area."
Founded in 1982, the Elkhorn Slough Foundation is dedicated to
conserving and restoring the Elkhorn Slough and its watershed.
By promoting the wise use of our coastal resources through education,
research, restoration, and protection of habitats, we strive to
preserve the natural heritage of Elkhorn Slough.
