Elkhorn Slough Foundation and Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve acquire funding for new lands.
The California Wildlife Conservation Board, this week, approved $2.68 million in funds to acquire a series of conservation lands in the Elkhorn Slough Watershed. This support is part of a long-term effort to conserve and restore Elkhorn Slough, one of California’s most biologically rich coastal wetlands.
The funding will add 144 acres to the permanently protected lands in the
Elkhorn Watershed and will be managed in partnership by the California
Department of Fish and Game’s Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve and the Elkhorn Slough Foundation.
Ryan Broddrick, outgoing chairman of the Wildlife Conservation Board and Director of the California Department of Fish and Game, praised the partnership between the non-profit Elkhorn Slough Foundation and the Elkhorn Slough Reserve.
“Together, you have forged a strong network of partners and done an outstanding job of engaging the community in the conservation of these amazing natural resources. I congratulate you and thank you” said Broddrick.
Elkhorn Slough, located in the central Monterey Bay area, supports a tremendous diversity of fish and wildlife, including more than a dozen rare, threatened or endangered species. A portion of the slough is a State Ecological Reserve and Wildlife area and is one of only 27 National Estuarine Research Reserves in the country. For more information visit: www.elkhornslough.org.
