Beach Lover

8/8/2005: This charming little native flower is Seaside Heliotrope (Heliotropium curassavicum – also called Salt Heliotrope). The Peterson guide says it prefers sandy shores, beaches, and marsh edges. Nonetheless, a nice patch can be found on the Reserve rather far from water – it's on the south side of the trail leading down from the overlook, opposite the small barn. For you native plant gardeners, Seaside Heliotrope is said to be a butterfly magnet.
