Education Specialist
Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve

Definition: 
Under the supervision of the Education Coordinator, the Education Assistant will provide support for the education program, Visitor Center operations, and the volunteer program.

Work Week: Variable but usually falling on Wednesdays - Saturdays.  Occasional Sundays and evening work will be required.

Term of Employment: starting immediately; half time with possibility for increase to full time depending on additional grant funding.

Wage: The salary range is $15-$20/hr. depending on skills and experience.

Typical Tasks:
40%     Assist with daily school tour programs and teacher support services.  Provide interpretive support in the Visitor Center and teaching lab.  Produce interpretive materials for school groups and the general public.  Maintain Visitor Center exhibits, teaching lab, educational materials, and equipment.

25%     Work with volunteers in the Visitor Center answering phones, running cash registers, greeting visitors, and providing interpretive support for visiting groups.  Respond to public inquiries via phone, mail and email.  Help maintain the Reserve’s master scheduling calendar for school group visits, docent lead tours, meetings, and special events.               

25%     Assist with workshop and special event planning and organization for the education and public outreach programs.  Assist with scheduling and general administration of the education and volunteer programs.

5%     Help maintain the education program and Visitor Center databases including school and teacher mailing lists, visitation statistics, volunteer records etc.

5%     Assist with ESNERR general administrative responsibilities and perform other education related activities as directed by the Education Coordinator.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:  Equivalent to completion of two years of college with a minimum of 10 semester units in biological sciences.

Experience: One year experience in natural history interpretation or education.

Possession of a valid California driver’s license; certified for basic CPR/First Aid

 

Knowledge and Abilities:
Applicants must have experience interpreting natural history to diverse audiences; must have good oral and written communication skills; must be skilled in computer word processing and database management with a working familiarity with Excel. Some experience with Access is recommended. Must be able to speak comfortably and effectively to individuals and groups; maintain a neat personal appearance; follow directions; organize work and reason logically; work independently; oversee and mentor volunteers; be able to work as part of a team; have a positive attitude and good people skills.  Knowledge of coastal wetlands, estuaries, and wetland ecology will be helpful.  Ability to speak Spanish strongly recommended.
